Dais worked with Sir Terence Conran, founder of award winning design studio Conran and Partners and Andaz London Liverpool Street, a five star luxury lifestyle hotel based in East London, providing a collection of commissioned artworks for the (ANDAZ)RED Suite.
The artworks were commissioned to bring a sense of place to the rooms with works made by local artists and pieces that are inspired by the history and culture of the hotel’s surrounding neighbourhood: London’s East End.
Artworks included a commissioned black and white photographic series produced by Japanese photographer Nobuyuki Taguchi. Taguchi took to the streets of East London photographing iconic buildings and well known local haunts including Columbia Road Flower Market, Hoxton Street, Petticoat Lane and Liverpool Street Station. The shoot resulted in a large series of images installed in a filmstrip format across the walls of the space; featuring a range of beautifully captured moments of everyday life in the East End.
Other artworks included a commissioned painting by Central Saint Martins graduate Rachel Garrard, which stretches over two meters in height. The piece was made while the artist was on a residency with the Yaddo Foundation in New York and references her larger series of work titled 'After Your Glow', which explores the traditions of contemplative painting. Each work from the series features interlocking shapes that imply pure and timeless forms and was made using rock pigment that the artist collected while on a four month period of travel through the Andean Peaks. The artist stated that the works 'are made both in homage to the mountains and are the mountains'.
Other commissions include a large watercolour painting by Goldsmiths and Central Saint Martins graduate Damien Borowik titled 'Flow', which expands nearly three meters in width and was suspended in a block of clear resin. The artwork features abstract undulating forms, reminiscent of an underwater scene. The commission was the artists first time returning to paint for five years. Dais worked closely with Borowik and a local fabrication company to oversee the production of the piece. Read more about the commission in our interview with Damien here and check out the time-lapse video below showing the making of the work.
Dais presented a variety of work by different artists to Sir Conran, the designers at Conran and Partners and Andaz London, before four finalist artists were shortlisted for the project. We project managed each commission, working closely with the artists and associated fabrication companies to see the works carried out and completed.
